what’s your why?

WHAT’S YOUR WHY?
What drives you to do the thing you do? What gets you fired up each morning to start your day? Maybe you don’t know what your why is yet and you are still searching for it. We asked this question for quite some time before starting Fuel.
After working at a big box gym for many years, we realized there was something very important that was missing. We would be standing in front of a class of 30 people and we would hardly know anybody’s name, let alone know if they had an injury that needed a modification. It was very impersonal and this experience lacked something that we could not quite put our finger on. We knew there could be something better, something more fullfilling.

On the weekend of July 4th, 13 years ago we decided to make a small move towards our why. We started our first outdoor bootcamp, with no permits, no permissions and pretty much no clients, but we were determined to create something better. We put the word out and within a week we had 20+ people signed up for 2 days a week at 6 am for 6 weeks. We had no studio to hold classes. We schlepped all our equipment in our cars to and from Mosely Pines.

As the weather started to turn, we starting looking for studio space. We had no idea what we were doing or how we were going to afford a studio. Fortunately we found a space in Amesbury with a reasonable rent and took a chance. We struggled with small classes but kept plugging along, knowing that we could create something better than what we previously experienced. A quick 6 months later we we were gently asked to leave for making too much noise during our cycle classes, imagine that : )

Thankfully we scored a tiny studio on Harris Street in Newburyport and that is where we were able to build the foundation of our why! It was community, that was it, that was the missing piece.

Since then we have had a few more studio locations and have finally found a home. We have learned a lot in the last 13 years, including this past one. Just when we thought things were finally stable, this last year really threw us, but just as we had done in the past with adverse situations, and there have been several, we put one foot in front of the other with no road map, no directions and nobody to tell us how to do it, we figured it out. Was it hard? Yup, it was and still is but we are committed to creating a place where everybody is welcome and everybody is seen and heard. We would not have it any other way. So that’s our why and that’s what inspires, drives and motivates us to be here and say “hello” each day.

What is your why? We would love to hear it. Share with us here or post on your social and tag @fueltrainingstudio, #whatsyourwhy
